Skin and wound ointments for animals are available from a wide variety of manufacturers and with a wide variety of compositions. There are ointments with and without antibiotics, purely herbal ointments and ointments synthetic active ingredients. Some have honey, some have oils...

Honey in particular is often used for wound ointments on a natural basis, as it has positive properties for healing.

The healing properties of honey: + Honey contains the enzyme glucooxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide in a moist environment. Hydrogen peroxide is known for its germicidal properties. + The high sugar content in honey removes water from microorganisms by simple osmotic processes and thus dries them out. + Honey has a low pH value, which stimulates the body's own wound healing and also creates an unfavourable environment for secondary germs.

Here we briefly compare some of the most common products.

Vulnoplant (PlantaVet)

VulnoPlant is a wound care cream for animals to promote healthy skin function with honey, medicinal plants and cod liver oil. It is said to promote wound-healing and regeneration.

Ingredients

A special feature of VulnoPlant is that it contains cod liver oil, which softens crusts and scales on the skin. The high vitamin A content also promotes skin growth while the containing oils also care for the skin. The most important ingredient in VulnoPlant is honey, which has all the above-mentioned positive properties for promoting wound-healing. It likewise contains chamomile, which promotes regeneration, as it contains skin-soothing mucilage and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Conclusion

The special feature of VulnoPlant is the combination of honey, chamomile and above all cod liver oil, which promotes wound healing, thus promoting wound healing at different levels. The ointment also has an attachable spout, which makes it possible to apply the ointment to specific areas in a well-dosed manner. Officially, you can only order from PlantaVet with proof from a veterinary clinic, but the ointment is also available to everyone in common online shops.

ManukaLind - our ointment from Inuvet

ManukaLind is a nourishing ointment to support skin regeneration. ManukaLind relies on the positive properties of high-quality Manuka honey and those of comfrey extract and essential oils.

Ingredients

ManukaLind does not contain "normal" blossom honey, but New Zealand Manuka honey. This is rich in methylglyoxal, a sugar breakdown product. Methylglyoxal is the reason why Manuka honey is increasingly used and appreciated in the medical field - it gives the honey extra antimicrobial properties. Manuka honey of course also has all the positive properties of honey in general. Comfrey extract increases blood circulation to irritated skin areas and thus stimulates regeneration. Furthermore, it contains essential oils that repel insects and prevent licking by the patient.

Conclusion

Manuka honey has a particularly high MGO value and contains certified amounts of methylglyoxal. The ointment also comes with a spout that can be used for spot application. Like all Inuvet products, ManukaLind is only available to patient owners in the practice.

Mielosan (cp-Pharma)

Mielosan is one of the caring ointments based on honey with natural ingredients. It can be used for injured and dry skin, is said to promote wound healing and keep secondary germs at bay.

Ingredients

Mielosan contains medicinal honey. This is characterized by a high content of glucooxidase as well as a low pH value and is germ-free due to gamma irradiation. Mielosan also contains essential oils.

Conclusion

Mielosan is a natural and gentle product that can be used relatively safely. Due to the irradiation of the medicinal honey, it is almost certainly germ-free and can be applied to open skin areas without hesitation. The essential oils keep insects away and prevent licking by the patient. The ointment is freely available online to anyone, allowing patient owners to treat without consultation or advice. Mielosan also does not offer a special attachment (spout), which makes targeted application to pinpoint areas of skin difficult.
